There are several geocaches located in and around The Lower North Thompson, as well as along hiking trails in the area. These are easy caches and are great for beginners. For those who want a bit more adventure, you can choose a geocache further out in the backcountry that is accessible by foot, mountain bike or horseback. The reality show, Mantracker, filmed two episodes in the Lower North Thompson Valley within the trail systems of Bonaparte Lake, Seven Sisters and Skull Mountain. Shortly thereafter, a geocaching area was established.

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.

Geocaches vary greatly in size and appearance. In the field you will see everything from large, clear plastic containers to film canisters to a fake rock with a secret compartment.

There are currently over a dozen cache types in geocaching, with each cache type being a different variation of the game.

You can register for free and download the geocaching app to get you started. For those who prefer a guide for the first time out, head up to Sun Peaks Resort where they will provide you with all the gear you need. You can even try it on horseback!
